STINASU is opgericht in Juni 1969 door Dr. Johan Schulz, toenmalig hoofd van Natuurbeheer. Met als doel natuurreservaten te ontwikkelen en te benutten voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek, natuureducatie en natuurtoerisme.
